There's a very specific look people get when this trifle comes out of the fridge — something between excitement and mild aggression, like a pack of wolves circling a deer. It's the most popular trifle I make, probably because it's nearly impossible to mess up anything involving Oreos.
Trifles get a reputation for being fancy, but this one is about as low-effort as desserts get: bake a box of brownies, stir together some pudding, and layer it all with softened Oreos and whipped topping. I've genuinely stood in front of the refrigerator with a spoon and a timer, waiting for this to be ready.
It keeps well for up to a week in the fridge, which is either a great make-ahead trick or completely irrelevant, depending on how fast your family finds it.
Ingredients
- 1 box brownie mix, plus oil, water, and eggs called for on the box
- 1 package Oreo cookies
- 2 small boxes instant chocolate pudding mix
- 4 cups milk, divided
- 1 (8 oz.) container whipped topping
Instructions
- 1Bake the brownies according to the directions on the box in a 9x13 inch baking dish. Cool completely.
- 2Whisk the pudding mix and milk together in a medium bowl until blended.
- 3Crumble half of the brownies into the bottom of a trifle bowl, then spoon half of the pudding mixture on top.
- 4Dip half of the Oreos in milk just to soften them, and layer them over the pudding.
- 5Spread half of the whipped topping over the Oreo layer, then repeat all of the layers once more.
- 6Top with crumbled Oreos, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate until ready to serve, up to 7 days.
